Short Term Therapy of Onychomycosis with Itraconazole

Abstract
This study investigated the epidemiology of the causative organism and the efficacy of the treat-ment of itraconazole 200mg daily in onychomycosis. From August 1992 to December 1993, 257 patients with onychomycosis at 51 universities and general hospitals were treated itraconazole 200mg daily for 6 weeks in fingernails and 3 months in toenails and were followed the clinical and mycolo-gical evaluation during 12 weeks and 6 months, in fingernails and toenails respectively. Among the total 257 patients, 54 patients were not followed and 3 patients stopped the treatment due to the adverse effects.
Remaining 200 patients (138 for toenails and 62 for fingernails) showed KOH positive and among 141 patients who were cultured, 97 patients of them were positive (68.8% of culture rate),
dermatophytes were 86.07, for toenails, 65.5c/-( for fingernails and non-dermatophytes were 14.O for toenails, 34.5% for fingernails.
The clinical responses were 94.2% for toenails (130/138) and 90.3% for fingernails (56/62_) at the end point and the mycological cure rates were 94.2% for toenails (97/103) and 98.0% for fingernails (4(/50).
It is concluded that the treatment of itraconazole 200mg daily is very effective in onychomycosis of dermatophytes. Candida spp, and other strains of the various fungi.
